Trending meme coins have come under market focus in August 2026 due to their changing activities in the market. CoinGecko data from Aug. 21 places the broader meme-token category at about $25 billion, below the roughly $33.8 billion recorded by the GMCI Meme Index in January.
Dogecoin remains the largest meme coin by market capitalization, while Shiba Inu, MemeCore, Pepe, Pump.fun, Pudgy Penguins, SPX6900, Bonk, FLOKI and Dogwifhat occupy other positions across the category.
The current market ranking reflects market capitalization, seven-day performance, trading volume and visibility rather than price performance alone. The figures also show a wide difference in liquidity between the largest assets and smaller tokens.
Trending Meme Coins Show Different Market Profiles
CoinGecko’s broader meme-token category stood at approximately $25 billion on August 21. That compares with the $33.8 billion market value reported for the GMCI Meme Index in January, when CoinDesk reported approximately $5.9 billion in 24-hour trading volume after gains in Dogecoin and Pepe.

The August figures show that the category has contracted from its January level. However, individual tokens continue to record notable weekly gains. The data also show that the sector includes assets with substantially different levels of market capitalization and trading volume.
Three market characteristics stand out:
- Dogecoin remains substantially larger than the other listed meme tokens by market capitalization.
- Pepe and Pump.fun had more than $100 million worth of transactions per day, as per data from CoinGecko.
- Smaller assets recorded stronger percentage movements while maintaining lower trading volumes.
Dogecoin and Shiba Inu Remain Major Assets
Dogecoin held the leading position with a market capitalization near $11 billion and approximately $400 million in 24-hour volume. CoinGecko also reported positive seven-day performance, while its Aug. 21 market summary said whales had accumulated about 680 million DOGE valued at roughly $48 million at the time.
Shiba Inu followed with a market capitalization of approximately $2.65 billion and more than $65 million in 24-hour volume. One Aug. 21 CoinGecko snapshot showed SHIB gaining about 10% over seven days. Shiba Inu’s ecosystem includes a Layer 2 network and other development initiatives. CoinMarketCap reported on Aug. 14 that more than 11 million SHIB had been removed in 24 hours.
MemeCore, Pepe and Pump.fun Draw Trading Activity
MemeCore had a market capitalization of approximately $1.46 billion to $1.48 billion on Aug. 21. Its daily volume was in the single-digit millions, creating a notable difference between its valuation and trading activity.
Pepe had a market capitalization near $1.2 billion and more than $100 million in 24-hour volume. CoinGecko recorded gains over seven- and 30-day periods, while CoinMarketCap reported an approximately 19% one-day increase on Aug. 20 during a broader cryptocurrency rally.
Pump.fun’s PUMP token had a market capitalization of about $1.09 billion, more than $130 million in daily volume and a seven-day gain above 30% in one Aug. 21 snapshot. Its token documentation identifies PUMP as the utility token associated with the Pump.fun protocols.
Other Trending Meme Coins Remain Smaller
Pudgy Penguins’ PENGU token had a market capitalization of roughly $400 million and more than $60 million in daily trading volume. SPX6900 approached a $300 million market capitalization, while CoinGecko placed its price around $0.32 and reported positive seven-day performance.
Bonk had a market capitalization near $200 million and approximately $25 million in daily volume, with seven-day gains above 15%. CoinGecko’s Solana meme category placed the broader sector at about $3.2 billion. The Block reported that BonkDAO lost about $20 million following a malicious governance proposal attack in July.
FLOKI also had a market capitalization near $200 million, with daily volume above $10 million and positive seven- and 30-day performance. Dogwifhat, or WIF, recorded a market capitalization near $140 million and about $19 million in daily volume.

Meme Coin Rankings Continue to Shift
The latest data show that market capitalization does not directly correspond with trading volume. MemeCore, for example, ranked above several established tokens by valuation while recording only single-digit millions in daily volume. Meme tokens like Bonk and Dogwifhat also had lower volumes compared to Dogecoin and Pepe.
The data shows the ranking of the meme token market as of Aug. 21 but does not create a permanent ranking as changes in price, volume, and market capitalization will change the rankings of assets that traders switch between.
